Wildlife in Pembrokeshire and when you can see it

From the Puffins on Skomer Island to the Otters at Bosherston, South Pembrokeshire, Wales, is one of the best places in the UK to explore and spot wonderful wild animals.  And with Puffin season fast approaching we thought now would be the best time to tell you about all the wonderful wildlife which Tenby and the surrounding Pembrokeshire coast-path area has to offer.

The visiting Puffins are a massive Tourist draw to the Pembrokeshire coastline.  People love to see these sweet red billed birds clumsily fly over the water, float in their rafts, and perch on the cliffs.  Puffin season in Pembrokeshire does last only a finite time however, so to catch a sight of the Puffins you need to be holidaying in Pembrokeshire between April and late July.

You’ll need to visit Skomer or Skokolm island in order to get a real-up close view of the Puffins, but the landings are very popular, and leave from Dale, around 20 miles away from Tenby.  However, you can also take a boat  trip with a Tenby based boat-trip provider, whose guides will give you lots of facts on Puffins, and all the other rare and interesting bird-life which the Pembrokeshire islands enjoy and will allow you to enjoy the sites of the cheery Puffins from the water.

Look out for Otters at Bosherston

Bosherston Lily Ponds is a beautiful National trust property, and part of the Stackpole Estate in South Pembrokeshire.  The Lily Ponds themselves come into flower in June and July, but the Otters can be seen all year round. The Otters at Bosherton Lily Ponds, Pembrokeshire are very shy and if you want to see them you have to be very quiet, but spotting a wild Otter is definitely worth the trouble and concentration.

Spot the Guillemots at Stack Rocks

Stack Rocks is found in the Castle Martin Range (Which also houses the amazing St. Govans Chapel, if you’re in the area you really must have a look).  These dramatic natural rocks and pillars are found on the South West Cost of Pembrokeshire.  Before visiting do check the opening hours by calling the Local visitor centre on 01437 776 499.

Stack Rocks, Pembrokeshire are not only an impressive natural landscape, but during the summer season they are also a great place to spot Guillemots, Razorbills, Chough, and Kittiwakes.  All manner of sea-birds use these rocks, close to the shore, as a safe place to nest.

Just a little further on than the Bosherston Lily Ponds from the centre of Tenby, Stack Rocks – Castle Martin come to life with birdlife with seabirds during the breeding season May – late July.  If you’re interested in a bird-watching holiday then a holiday in South Pembrokeshire is a perfect place to visit.

 See the Seals in the Irish Sea

Pembrokeshire is also a great hub for Atlantic Grey Seals.  Even though you can often see  Seals in the coves and bays the pupping season is the best time to catch a look at the seals and their pups.
